While you are waiting for your unemployment application, your stimulus check, or food stamp application results, remember, that's exactly what some of you voted for, namely "smaller government". The whole idea that when corporations apply for government bailouts is urgent while individuals seeking help is shameful, is in itself shameful and highly hypocritical in a supposedly "capitalist" economy. Since all of the above are made possible by government contributions. One is labelled a subsidy to preserve its users digjnity, while the other is demeaned, as so called conservatives like to brand it as welfare.
The problem is that the same 37% (90% of Republicans) of the nation that looks down on those who seek assistance are the same people finding themselves in that same sinking boat, looking for life preservers. For instance, the Tea Party movement that so vocally decried the previous administration for bailouts of people caught up in the trap that is adjustable rate mortgages, now sit quite silently as the country magically finds over 2 trillion dollars to bailout the rich.
Notice how little debate and not a peep of the popular refrain heard whenever universal healthcare, reparations for descendants of slavery. or a universal basic income are even mentioned: "How will you pay for it?" Any other form of welfare requires extensive screening, with extreme scrutiny of every penny an applicant has, while corporations are simply told they must not decrease the size of their workforce AFTER they get their welfare check; so of course they are laying off people in mass before the check gets cut.
This double standard represents the hypocritical scourge of this country. The same gullible stupid people who believed there were WMD's in Iraq and chased them, to the peril of thousands of US troops and countless foreigners, until oops there weren't any WMD's, are the same crowd that fell for the Obama Birther conspiracy, until oops the president who propagated that lie disavowed it. The same folks still believe polution has no cost to the environment and that climate change is a hoax. They simply ignore the floating islands of garbage, the undrinkable water in Flint (and across the country), and the inedible seafood tainted by welfare farmer's runoff and microplastics in the oceans.
They're convinced all of the above are a hoax, like their dear leader told them Corona Virus was hoax. Now, those same people find themselves in food lines again, and some even facing the death panels a certain hypocrite from Alaska duped them into believing would happen if all of America is given healthcare as a right. Ironically, medical professionals are being forced to choose who gets to keep a ventilator and live & who gets to die for lack of equipment, though the dear leader says there's no shortage.
Now, many of the same people find\ themselves and their loved ones in an unemployment line wondering how they will make ends meet; even with the $1200 one-time welfare stimulus check that not everyone will qualify for; meantime Canada (with a smaller economy) is giving its citizens $2000 each for the duration of the crisis. Americans form a staggering unemployment line; a line that is millions long. A line that took only 3 weeks to eclipse the line formed during the whole four years of the Great Depression (1929-1933).
So blinded by loyalty to party, and in many many cases racist, homophobic, and sexist beliefs (often in that order) to their own detriment; not to mention opposition to abortion (by the way many of those same people secretly lust after same sex relations and are willing to pay for it, as well as abortions. The Republican Party relies on such blind loyalty and blatant hypocrisy to remain in power, incidentally receiving lifetime benefits, paid vacations, security guards, first class healthcare (all subsidized by taxpayers), and as if that weren't enough, inside information that allows them to propel themselves to the status of billionaires, without term limits, they convince the brainwashed that somehow they give a damn what happens to them.
Among the worst offenders are those who use those who don't bother to think, but prefer to be told what to believe by someone that looks like them, particularly from a pulpit; as if God ever said follow the leader. When you consider there are celebrities doing more to help the common man, like Cardi B who is donating a million dollars to random strangers in need, while our president prepares to receive $40 billion dollars for his businesses of the bailout legislation recently passed, while blaming Obama (who hasn't been in office 3+ years) for lack of emergency PPE that he could have replaced by now if that were true. What's worse, telling America the number of COVID- 19 cases will be down to zero soon, making it easy to see who is walking the walk and who is all talk, Liberals are labelled Godless, but look around and see how few alleged Christian conservatives are donating their time or money to the least among us.
As always, race rears its ugly head with a triple whammy for black people. The first being all the systemic racial disparities noted by the FBI in the justice system leaves 2 million incarcerated people at risk. Compounded by the disparity in healthcare availability & denial of treatment of African Americans, the dire odds are being highlighted by the disproportionate morbidity rate of the disease among people of color, namely black people, in correctional facilities (modern slave labor that is, believe it or not, codified in the US Constitution.
To add insult to injury, as the president vilifies China for distorting numbers and the World Health Organization for its pace in response to the pandemic, he's simply projecting. He disingenuously bragged about a million tests being performed, knowing that represents less than 1% of the US population. Then admitted testing for everyone is NOT a priority (since he also knows that the number of infected will skyrocket) so how can we possibly know who has it or that we have peaked in the number of infected. As if that weren't enough, Republicans set the wrong example, by refusing to wear a mask publicly (though it wouldn't surprise me if he immediately masks up when the cameras & crowds aren't around), practice social distancing during his fallacy filled press conferences, or even demand GOP governors expand Medicaid as a very minimal step toward helping all those millions who will soon find themselves without affordable health care coverage. He could easily steal Democratic thunder by expanding Medicaid and claiming it as his idea and win reelection with ease, but he didn't.
Speaking of China, to complete the kick in the teeth, black people there are being evicted and forced to live in the streets while their passports are confiscated so they couldn't legally leave if they wanted to; as if black people set up the wet- markets that are believed to be the spark of the current pandemic. Meantime, Chinese people are being targeted as carriers of the plague, just as mutants were in the old Xmen animated series, but as it turns out, genomic testing has revealed that the source of most of the infections that\have ravaged New York actually arrived via Europeans; and just like that, the 37% moves on from placing blame.
The president deserves credit in that he hit the voter jackpot in the finding a crowd of voters who will follow him to hell just because he has the skin color they prefer in a commander in chief and cool blond hair,(the ash blond toner suits you better 45) regardless of what's in his head; and judging by his actions what's in his head right now is making all the money he can as president, and they don't seem to care; even as they wait for that same welfare they forgot was originally formed for them and which they are still the majority recipients of. From the Homestead Act to the Head Right Act, to the GI Bill, all those government programs are very much under the umbrella of welfare aka socialism.
The same crowd of people who believed Obama was going to go after their guns and were wrong again, are completely silent as this administration tramples states rights, Although, on a brighter note, the whacked out right wingers haven't been doing any school shootings since all this began; silver lining??
Unless and until the ish hits the fan and that vocal minority of people who vote faithfully are outmatched by While you are waiting for your unemployment application, your stimulus check, or food stamp application results, remember, that's exactly what some of you voted for, namely "smaller government".
